Join us this evening, February 22, 2012, for an Ash Wednesday Service, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m
Ash Wednesday is viewed as the first day of the season of Lent within the Church’s liturgical calendar, occurring after the last Sunday of Epiphany, Transfiguration Sunday, and forty days prior to Easter, not including Sundays. On Ash Wednesday, our foreheads are marked with ashes as a symbol of humility and as a reminder of death. Within the Church, ashes are viewed as a symbol of penance, which helps us in developing a more humble and sacrificial spirit. The ashes used come from the burning of palm leaves used on the previous year’s Palm Sunday and are often mixed with a combination of water, dirt, and/or oil.
Glimpses of Faith, Stories of Faith: Voices that have Influenced our Christian Life
January 8 – April 1, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
“We read to know that we are not alone.” – CS Lewis
For centuries, men and women have written books, sermons, and speeches inspired by their faith. Their stories of faith inspire our own as we realize that we are not alone; we have the same questions, the same hopes and dreams, and the same fears as many others. Join us for a 13-week study on Sunday mornings as we explore the writings, and the stories behind them, of Walter Brueggemann, CS Lewis, Henri Nouwen, Clarence Jordan, and Barbara Brown Taylor, to name just a few.
